I found this penny which I can only describe as swollen or puffy. Towards the rim of the coin it becomes puffy and makes the letters look almost flush with the background. It looke like the only way you can see the L and I in Liberty is because they are slightly outlined. The reverse of the penny is slightly similar but not nearly as noticeable. What is this, how did this coin get like this? Thanks for the help and information!

Here are some pics of the obverse.

I've now found another 1988 penny that has the same puffy characteristic as the first one.

I've seen them like that before. Not sure what causes it.

It is a form of die wear typically found on Zincolns(post-1982 cents)

Thanks for the info. So there's really nothing special about this coin then?

There shouldn't be any trick to downloading ht epics. Once you click the link to the webpage you should just be able to right click on them and do "Save Picture As".

Nope, nothing special. It is quite common and as mentioned, it is a result of having been struck by a worn die.

Thanks,
Bill
