Tonight on ebay I won a fairly scarce 2 Real counterfeit dated 1827. The 2Rs are less common than 8Rs especially when dated before 1840.

I believe the coin is a German Silver strike and that it was made on a rocker press. The forger made his own hand engraved fantasy dies. My estimate without having it in hand is that it was made in the late 1830's and probably in the US.

It is a decent copy of an original - but the mint mark - the generally odd lettering - poorly executed rays and of course the stretched multiple strike (rocker press) makes it fairly easy to pick out.

The most common counterfeit 2R's are the brass or bronze strikes with thin silver plates made in the 1870s in northern Mexico. This coin uses fantasy dies instead of impact transfer dies.

swamperbob- Sounds pretty cool. I would be curious to see this coin. Do you have a link to the ended auction?

Very interesting. Can you post bigger pictures when the coin arrives?
