Hi,

I recently acquired 3 sets of Israeli prutah coins, I have 3 examples of each of these.http://www.bankisrael.gov.il/catal/...=500%20PRUTA

My question is about the dates. They all seem to show the same date in the Hebrew calender , each denomination showing a different date(all 3 coins same date, but each different coin has a different date) Were they all minted at the same time, or were the coins marked with the date of issue only and note the date of minting.

Thanks!

These 500 Prutah are all the same date, 1949, Israel's second year as a state. Certain coins were issued and carried the issuance year. Later on with the shift to the Lira/Agora the dates changed annually.

Here are the scanned images, got 3 sets of the same things various condition. Can anyone tell me how the currencies equate, eg mil -> prutah -> lira -> shekel, etc. I know they are no longer legal tender, but what was the exchange rate from one to another when they were introduced?

Israel's first currency was 1000 mils to the pound, the same as that used in the old British Mandate of Palestine. The names were changed on the coins from 1949 to 1958 to 1000 prutah to the lirah, but the values were equivalent; 1 prutah = 1 mil and 1 lirah = 1 pound.

In 1958, they switched to a system of 100 agorot to the lirah, so 10 prutah = 1 agorah; the lirah was kept the same.

In 1980, the lirah was replaced with the sheqel, at a rate of 10 lirot to the sheqel; 10 agorot equalled one new agorah. Another reform happened in 1985, with the new sheqel introduced at a rate of 1000 sheqel to the new sheqel. This new sheqel is the currency still in use in Israel.
