Here is my second acquisition for my 2Cent/3Cent Dansco...How would you grade this one? I got a little better lighting on these pictures than my last one.

Nice coin. There looks to be small traces of PVC or vertigris, so I'd consider an acetone bath. Possibly an old cleaning, but not bad. Close to XF....i'd guess VF-35, but I'm far from an expert on these.

It probably makes EF-40 by PCGS grading standards. The parallel scratches over the portrait do suggest an old cleaning and an acetone bath might help a bit to remove corrosive contaminants. Still, a nice coin and very good for type.

Hair above forehead and down the side worn, I'd grade it at VF-30.

VF35

Personally, I would give it a soaking overnight in acetone (pure!) and lightly use a cotton swab to remove all that verdigris.

Thanks for all of the input, I usually don't consider the grading opinions on my 3CN's until Prethren weighs in.

I did not see the green stuff, until the picture was blown up. Note to self, bring loop with me next time.

I did soak for a few minutes after first mention, but I may give the overnight soak a try.

Thanks again everyone, more to come....soon I hope

You probably want to rinse with distilled water after the soak and then pat dry (after removing spots...if possible).

So I gave it a bath and tried the light cotton swab, with no change in the meany greeny. Is this something I need to be concerned with spread and ruining the coin? Are there any other suggestions to stop any further corrosion.

I believe in theory it can spread on the coin and it could corrode into the coin where it sits, as well. How long did you let it bathe? Another possibility is denatured alcohol. I've had very good luck with that as well (overnight). Don't forget the distilled water rinse afterwards and pat dry.

I let it sit 24 hours in Acetone, and softly touched the area with the cotton swab after, I did not want to risk any rubbing.

Where would one find denatured alcohol? I will give that a try next.

It should be available at your local hardware store.
