I got a package today of pre 1942 Icelandic 1 Eyrir's from a friend of mine in Iceland. He had instant messaged me last week and told me that he obtained a bunch of Eyrir's and asked if I wanted to see them and I said sure. I asked him if he had any 1937 Eyrir's and he said I'll just mail them to you because he had to go. Well I was so surprised to find Super nice 1939 1 Eyrir with the small 3. I have one already but was looking for a much nicer one that I can send out to get graded, I already have a graded large 3 over small 3. Then my eyes grew big when I saw another 39 eyrir with a large 3 but looked different then the one I have in the slab, Not trusting my eyes I grabbed my 16x loop and saw that the 3 didn't to have a small 3 under it. Holy poop I said to myself there is just a large 3.
You see the Krause book and The currency of Iceland both list the 1939 1 Eyrir as having 2 varieties a large 3 and a small 3 and no large 3 over on top of a small 3, so I thought that the 3over3 was the large 3 and having seen about 10 or so of the 3/3 and only a couple of a small 3 variety. Well the 3 over 3 seems to be the common one of the three types and The plain large 3 seems to be the rarest of the three since I must have examend about 40 of the 39 Eyrir and just found the large 3 today. I don't know if either of the publishers know of this or not.

Nice Find

Die punch variations are always interesting and need to be discovered or re-discovered periodically to keep people informed. Varieties like this seldom get listed in books like Krause - but I hope they do. The three varieties have a story to tell.

That's very interesting!
And, if I compare the distances between the 3 and 9 between the large3/small3 and the large 3, the distances are different.
I did an overlay which shows the distance for the "large 3" is closer, particularly the tail of the 9 (arrow)

Thank you swamperbob I happen to know a gentlemen that does work on the world coin book at Krause publishing and after finding the plain large 3 today I told myself that I need to contact him about this.

Thank you DVCollector for doing this comparison of the two coins. I did notice that the angle of the extreme far left points of the nine was at a different angle then the other. But from your comparison photo I see that the nine is also a bit larger. Do you think that maybe these two coins 3over3 and the large 3 could have come from the same die? Maybe the die was altered? the reason I ask that because Iceland has a 1938 2 aurar that has a 8 that was altered as the die wore down they are a normal 8, half filled 8, and a filled 8.

I also wondered at no listing for a "large 3/small3" variety, and thought perhaps the "large 3" was re-tooled die. (correction)
That's why I did the overlay, but since the 9 position is different, I'm guessing it would be very hard to re-work that.
And look how raised parts of the small 3 are on the 3/3...could that be removed?

They do list in both books of the large 3 and small 3 but no mention of the large 3 having a small 3 under it, and I would not know if they could rework the die maybe someone else here can shed some more light on this. Thanks again DVCollector for your help.
