I have not seen this posted yet and I am VERY curious.

livingdinosaur wrote on another post (on how to clean a coin) and I didn't want to hijack the topic so I posted it here for discussion:

I WASH my coins in boiling mineral water, with Awesome, to get rid of the oily residue. This after soaking in mineral oil for a month

Does this work? Are you happy with this?

I have noticed many folks on this Forum (who I respect enormously)have awesome and clean "looking" coins with no trace of grime OR (Thank God) rub marks from obvious cleaning. Are the coins originally this nice or was there an "intervention"?

I was always curious on the best way to effectively "clean" (but NOT clean), if you know what I mean, a coin.

I have heard of acetone soaking. What can (and can't) this do for your coin?

I'm also sure cleaning methods also vary by coin material. (Copper versus silver, etc.) What do you do differently for each?

Please let me know any methods of (100% non-destructive) "cleaning" methods you might employ.

I REALLY want to know!

Moe145, allow me to "qualify", my statement: This only applies to FE, IHC, wheats, and CanadianCENTS. I do not even attempt other metal aoolys, pure, or otherwise. I don't collect them to that extent.

So, in answer to your questions, yes it does work, and I'm happy with it. The coins do not come out "bright, shing clean! They still will have a bit of the crud in the very small places, that are too inaccessable to reach with a thiorn, so it stays. I remove as muct as possible, very gently, so as not to scratch, or otherwise damage the patina of the coin. This will usually allow me to determine if there are any RPD', MPD, etc, andat the same time leave the coin "untouched", as far as cleaning goes. I have tried the methods of many different members of the various forums, on common , everyday wheats, and had different degrees of success, and failures. No matter which method you try, USE COINS THAT ARE ONLY WORTH FACE VALUE! That way you still have that value, when you "recycle" them, after making your test. I do not "do" any other coins, so I can't give you any of my results. FYI, I have seen coins that still have the crud in place, and the coins are worth four figures! When in doubt, send your coin to an expert, and get his opinion, as to what you have, and then you won't have to wonder. good luck with your "washing, and or cleaning"!
