I was looking through a roll of dimes and came across this one. It's got a series of die cracks/chips that make it look like he has some sort of skin disease above/on his eyebrow, on his nostril, and just to the side of his nostril runing down towards his chin. Is there any value to something looking this ugly or is it just a funny example of die cracks forming into die chips?

Some people will buy those. I think it's common to see those chips.

I found a second 2007-P dime which has the exact same scars as this one, but to a lesser degree. They're in the same spots. Is it possible that this second coin is an earlier version of this deformed dime and came from the same die before the cracks and chips had grown? Or would those chances just be too great that it's nearly impossible? What do you think, possible?

It's possible. In fact, I have a set of three coins sitting on my desk that exhibit progressing stages of the same die break.

It is also possible, for example, for die cracks to develop on different dies but in a similar location.

Sometimes, there is an inherent weakness in a design that can cause die cracks to develop along a line of weakness.

Take Kennedy half dollars or States Quarters, for example.

Both designs coincidentally have an inherent design flaw that causes die cracks to develop along the bottom of the bust on each design.

So, a die crack or chip above or around that area of the dime can be seen on coins struck from many different dies or you might be able to, on a rare day, find two dimes struck from the same die that also has that crack.

Thanks,
Bill

This can happen on the older cents as well. Seems like the newer ones have the opposite problem with the strong die cracks/Chips on the back of the head. On the Cent reverses on the older 60's Cents the column # 12 seemed to have die cracks on this on many dies. The new ones seem to have stronger ones on the 1st bay. Anything is possible and does happen over and over as the dies are made exactly alike, suffer the same exact things and wear down almost exactly alike. It's just the nature of the job they must perform. If they crack up they get an earlier retirement after they have done all they can do.
