I do not know how to tell for sure if an early coin is indeed a proof ...... but that is a fine looking coin indeed.

If it was a proof, you could look at the rims. It should be very finely struck there and have mirrored fields under the toning. If you pulled it from circulation, there should be all kinds of marks on those mirrored surfaces under magnification. Hard to tell from the pics.
