Found this while doing the nickel survey; never thought I'd find one of these!

It has the telltale "hole" in the bottom of the R of PLURIBUS.
Terrible looking coin, but I love it!

That is a very nice find! It is also the same date as my Henning (other than 1944). Another thing I noticed on my Hennings with this hole in the R reverse is some little raised dots within the M of UNUM. Sometimes on more worn coins they are hard to see. Several years ago I took my 1939 Henning to the ANA's Summer Seminar and one of the people I showed it to was Ken Bressett. He said if memory served him correctly, the 1939 is the most uncommon date for the Henning nickels. CONGRATS! This is quite a find!

Wow what a find! That is the best coin you have found roll searching as far as rarity and value go.
If the 1944 fakes sell for 30 to 40 bucks in that condition, this even more scarce Henning should do even better. I hope I find one someday! Congrats!

MikeThePenny,

Here's a link.....

http://www.numismaticenquirer.com/T...0Nickel.html

I have spent the last half hour or so doing some 'Net research, and on another collectibles thread there is a claim from someone that says they sold a 1947 Henning at a show for $175, and after purchase the buyer said he would have paid three times that for it. If the 1939 is supposed to be the rarest, what would it go for? And some links claim that the 1953 is yet to be discovered, and others claim that there is a discovered 1953, but another undiscovered unknown date (presumably without the hole in the R)

Now I really want to read Dwight Stuckey's book on the Hennings. Looked on ebay; nothing there. Now on to Amazon.....

I'm curious to hear where you read about the 1947 selling for $147. I think I know who that dealer is. He is a friend of mine. Could you give the link for this and also the links to the 1953? Thanks.

HA!

I have to admit I didn't keep track of any of it! But I will go find them again, and bookmark them this time!

Here is what I have so far:

http://(046) This link is not allowed by the Staff &threadid=723814&STARTPAGE=1

I'm glad I went back to look at this, because I found that I misquoted! I had thought that a poster on the forum in this link said that he sold the 1947 for $175 and the purchaser would have paid 2 to 3 times more. It actually said that the 1947 was sold 2 to 3 YEARS ago for $175, and the buyer would have paid more. But $175 is still pretty nice!

Sorry to the Staff about the above disallowed link; I think I can understand why it isn't allowed! But the gist of what was there I summarized above.

So the website states that he made these with a few different dates. So do all of the dates have the looped/hole in the leg of the "R" on the reverse?

CND, You had me all excited LOL. I thought you had found where another 1947 had been sold. Archraz, Henning claimed to have made 6 reverse dies and not all have the hole in the R. Of all the Hennings I have about half have the hole and half do not. But I specifically look for Hennings without the hole so this total is skewed a little. Personally, I see a few more for sale with the hole than without.

The thing that I've always wondered about, and wasn't explained in the links I found, is "how did he make them". I'm guessing he must have had machinery for stamping tokens or something like that.

Brannenworks,

Here is a link that might shed some light; the method of manufacture is discussed here a little.

Excellent! Great Find!

I would be absolutely fired up if I found one ..... I can imagine the thrill CND after all the nickels you have searched.

It's quite amazing that we have had two of these Henning nickels posted in the past few weeks .... your 1939 and numiso 1944.

I would enjoy learning more about these ..... I'll browse the links in this thread and see what I can learn.

Thanks for sharing this with us CND

Best

David
