Hello again, as you might know I am a Canadian collector but from time to time I pick up the odd US coin..... Such is the case with this one.... I have looked in the RS Yeoman Red Book but cannot find this variety........... I am hoping that some Forum member can let me in , all I know for sure is that its supposed to be quite rare , even has die cracks or split planchet?

This is an interesting coin. Notice how missing details in the date area correspond to a lack of detail on the reverse?
Is the coin thinner in this area? That might explain the lack of details, which may be helped along by wear, corrosion and perhaps damage. An expert might be able to ID the die pair from the remaining details, but this could take some research.

Thanks DV, as for the coin no it is not thinner ...I actually had a friend of my daughter bring the coin to the college where he put it under a high powered scope... There is no date at all...and no trace that any was there. If you really look you can see some of the ladies bust so if the date was worn there should be remnants of it... Wish I new an expert....

Its just a flowing hair large cent. Quite damaged.
You might be able to figure out the year by looking at the die type but that is going to be quite hard.

I would trying putting it under the Classic US coins Forum.

I'm just suggesting other explanations, because there is not a documented dateless coin in this series, per Sheldon's book on the draped bust cents. For it to be truly dateless, it would have to be struck from a die lacking a date. The most likely explanation is a dirty die that obscured details on the obverse/reverse.
