I'm not the expert on these, but the surface looks odd to me. The little something at the edge at 6 o'clock on the first picture does, too.

Meant to ask: Did you happen to get a weight?

I'm with xshift on this one...the denticles with a raised rim seems odd to my eyes. I thought these coins were struck without a collar, where the edge markings were added prior to strike? Let's see what the experts say...

I was looking for a 1752 Santiago 8R for comparison, but I found a 1796--a different type obviously, but it's good to see the edge/denticles:

Swamperbob would be the person to know for sure, but from what I can see the shield design looks crudely made to me. I going to say it's a fake.

Weight: I don't know and I don't have any chances to check it out. Here's picture of the original one from CoinArchives:

The entire thing REALLY looks odd now with the comparison pictures. Mushy details all over.. I'm guessing it's a little too crude to be real.

The surfaces look very shoddy, lions on the coat of arms and the flowers on both obverse and reverse look totally wrong, and the edge design is a laughable imitation of the lotus pattern. This is a fake coin.

Sorry DagonX, your coin is a fake. First off there are no known 1752 Santiago 8 reales known to exist, nor any mint record that says any were minted. Second the edge is completely wrong. The picture of the original you posted is a Lima mint 8 reales, not a Santiago mint coin. ctually the whole coin looks wrong. Mint maarks looks wrong, date font is wrong, proportions on the coin are wrong. It would be interesting to weigh and measure the coin (size and thickness) and determine if it is even a silver fake.

Well, the diagnosis is correct - it is a modern counterfeit.
I am wondering where it originated and what it is made of?
