Hi,

Can anyone translate the Thai on this coin to English? It is a one satang coin from 1919 (Y-35). Is correctly positioned for top & bottom.

Thailand-Satang

Thanks for the help. -- Terrell

The wording is SIAMA RATH (Kingdom of Siam). The border around the hole with the curlicue at the top is the symbolic letter UNALOM. This is a symbolic representation of the King's authority but very difficult to pin down exactly. It's origins I have no idea about and neither does my Thai wife...

Thanks for the information. I thought the curilcue was a symbolic rasmi (flame finial), but your explaination makes more sense. The coin is called Unalom-Chakra in some places. So if the obverse contains Unalom then the reverse contains the Chakra (sun spiral with eight spirals).

I have found the coin was minted in at three locations: Philadelphia, Brussels, and Birmingham for 1918-19. Do you concur? There are variations in the date with the six being described as short, long, and standard which would account for the different mints.

If your interested I'll take some pictures of the 1918 and post them, as I have both the long and short six of this year.
