Hello
Here, in Barcelona, it is gossip that the Hispanic Society of America (New York) has intention to sell its collection of coins.

The gossip say, that Sotheby's will help or make the auction.

Somebody have a true news?

If thats true, probably, will be bigger than the actully "Caballero de Yndias" auction.

Best Regards Joan

The collection in question is/was on "permanent" loan to the American Numismatic Society which shared a building with the Hispanic Society in New York. Recently, the two organizations have been feuding over the collection and lawsuits have been flying about. The Hispanic Society wants to sell it off while the ANS holds the position that the original donor, Archer Huntington, did not want the collection to ever be broken up. This article is a year old but provides some of the background info. As far as I know, legal proceedings are still ongoing and a sale cannot take place until the courts make a ruling as to the actual status of the collection.

Great info, bio..

I don't understand this part:

Quote:

Ms Kagan says ANS donors would not be able raise the funds to buy it, though she would particularly like to acquire the antique items that today cannot be obtained legally because of restrictive patrimony laws.

Wouldn't any patrimony laws affecting these items prevent the sale to begin with? They couldn't sell, ANS couldn't buy..
