My friend was telling me about this quarter he got which he called a silver proof coin. I asked him the mint mark and confirmed that it was a proof but what silver content percentage would this coin be?

Sorry to say, but a 1987-S proof Quarter would be Cu-Ni clad. All proof Quarters before 1965 were 90% silver. There were also 40% silver proofs available for the Bicentennial (dated 1776-1976). They did not regularly offer the 90% proofs again until 1992.

I'd be willing to bet 0%. If it indeed is a 1987S. The silver proofs didn't start until 1992!

Oh sorry I forgot the title and thought it was a silver State Quarter or pre-1964 quarter.

The 1987-S Silver Proofs: Cladding 80% silver 20% copper, Core 20.9% silver, 79.1% copper. With 4,227,728 minted, according to the coin facts on this forum. So are they wrong?

Those are the mintage figures of the regular proofs! I think maybe you misinterpreted the information given.
