Does anyone know of a simple test for PVC in plastic? I saw an article in Coin World several years ago, but cannot find the article or any info by Searching Coin World. I think you heated up a copper wire then gt a dab of plastic on it, then heated up both with a torch. But, that is all I can recall. Any help would be appreciated. My thoughts are about storing BU Lincolns in FoodSaver vacuum bags. My concern is that they have PVC in them or something that would cause damage to the copper coins.

I wouldn't trust them but it says that you can store coins in their bags here on their website:

Not sure about that , but what I have done in the past was buy the regular coin plastic flips and I would use an eletric heat sealing machine to form a weld.... This makes it air tight which I think is what you want to do...

Googling "test for PVC" came up with this page on the Brent-Kruger website as the number 1 hit.

You've remembered the procedure pretty much right. Watch for a green flame; that's the sign that there's chloride or something else acidic present that's reacted with the copper in the wire.

You can stick to PE bags, these are soft film plastic, looking not-so-clear, grey hazy, smokey, but still transparent bags that can be sealed only with an electric impulse sealer like artdio is using.

Avoid very clear and crispy transparent plastic film bags, this would have some PVC

If I recall correctly, PVC is not allowed in food storage materials, so anything used for food should be free of PVC.

Some of the food-safe stuff comes in rolls, for wrapping food baskets and such. Available in every color.. and clear You could secure quite a few coins with just one roll.

Hi 2old!
PE = Polyethylene, food grade plastic, sealable thru induction sealing only, hazy translucent and inexpensive plastic film
PVC = Polyvinylchloride, Clear plastic, mostly used for toys and miscl items packaging as moulded stiff plastic cover. Heat sealing, more expensive than PE

If you have to set all your holders on fire to see if they contain PVC or not, you may as well just throw them all out, and go out and do a bulk purchase of PVC-free holders!! (anyone else see the irony in the test?)

Regarless of what anyone may say or think, the best method to find out if there is anything of danger in something is to contact the manufacturers. I did with Zip Lock Plastic Bags. I have over 100 Albums in the Gallon sized Zip Lock Bags. I contacted the manufacturer and asked. And naturally I was informed the Federal Government makes it mandatory that there is NO PVC in any product that comes in contact with food.
So rather than stories that may or may not be true, contact the manufacturers.

I appreciate all your comments. I have decided to put them in rolls, then seal in FoodSaver vacuum bags. I plan on leaving these sit 20+ years. Thanks for all your comments.

Exactly what kind of rolls are you considering? Note that there are numerous manufacturers of paper type rolls and some may contain something that will damage your coins. Of course that is probably minimal even if there was since your going to seal in a plastic bags. No air, no chemical reaction. Possibly the plastic rolls, although expensive, would be the best for your purpose.
If your into coins as a hobby, I really can't see the purpose of acquiring a coin, then putting it away for the future. It's sort of like buying a car and putting it in storage for tomorrow. Always reminds me of a person that did that and after well over 30 years of that car sitting for tomorrow, he passed away. His relatives sold it and someone just drove it as if it was just a car.

I have a coffee can full of AU/BU/RD Zincolns. They have little value. I thought I would archive them and put them in the treasure chest I have for my 2 sons when I kick the bucket. Some of the items in the chest have a bit more value. I think it will be fun for them when I go. They know nothing of it. I asked to be cremated and my ashes spread along a Mexican or Caribbean beach. The money the save in funeral expenses should pay for the trip.

Rather a morbid outlook on tomorrow. Why would a bunch of almost worthless coins be fun? I'd sure hate to say this but that is not the way I'd like to be rememebered. Spreading your ashes on the beach too is rather morbid. Imagine all the Mexicans stepping on you.
Why not just invest in something nice and/or valuable in coins for them or just put some money in a savings account for them now. Even though the banks interest rates are low now, in just a few hundred years even a small amount would be worth something.
