Check out this ebay ad:
[eBayItem]330360787208[/eBayItem]

The way I understand it, on the 1820 CBHs, only the O-104 and O-105 varieties have the very wide date (same obverse die),

BUT, on the reverse (different dies), the O-105 has the I on the right side of the T

while, the O-104 variety has the I on the left side of the T.

So, the seller is assigning this coin a Rarity of R4+ when it's really a rarity of R1.

Thoughts? Confirmations?

Your diagnostics are quite correct, according to Overton. With that given, the seller's coin sure looks like O-104 to me.

The seller's response:

Quote:
Hi Moe! Thanks for writing to express your concerns with the attribution of this coin. Everything you say about the O-104 vs. the O-105 is correct. I must admit that when you look at the reverse image in the listing, it appears the "I" is to the right of the "T", but it is in fact to the left. The other points to consider are that this coin DOES NOT have the triple milling segment at the leaves as does the O-105 and it DOES have the reverse die crack through the "50" that the O-105 does not. This coin is the O-104 R4+ variety; I'd guarantee that any major grading service (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) would attribute it as such. It does pay to check things on ebay carefully as many coins are misattributed - I even have coins in P*C*I and S*E*G*S holders with the wrong Overton variety listed. Thanks again for writing and happy hunting. Hope I can help you out at some point with needs in Bust Halves. They are neat coins to collect. Sincerely, Bob T BHNC #169

The coin appears to be an O.104, it shows the wide date, the recut star 2 with the extra points, and base of the D is lower than the E on the reverse.

Heritage shows only 8 auctions since 2000 of attributed O-104's; all of them show the I in a similar location to the ebay auction coin. The seller claims a Bust Half But Club membership, easily verified. He's currently listing 35 coins, all of them Bust Halves.

I'm inclined to take this guy at his word.

Now *that's* the way to run an auction.

Clear, close-up pictures, very detailed explanation of the coin, its features, color and patina. Even notes what he uses to attribute. Pleasant, detailed, helpful response to inquiry.

Quite a breath of fresh air from the "see pic - you grade" type of auction I usually see.

In regards to the coin itself - from looking at the pictures, it looks like the O-104. Note that on the 105 the I is slightly more to the right than the 104 is to the left (looks more centered than 'to the left' to me) so even at a slight angle, a 105 would still appear slightly 'to the right'. (Did that make sense? )

The guy does have the BHNC credentials to support his assigned variety. Therefore, I also would take him at his word.

It was also a refreshing change to get a knowledgeable and respectful answer to my question. A class act!

There's an auction done by a collector, for collectors! Classy response too!
I suspect the slight discrepancy of the "I" must be the lighting angle, considering all the other confirming markers.

I am always concerned when a coin of this rarity and value being sold on ebay isn't slabbed. It can increase the sale value more than enough to recover the costs, which would be less for a seller who apparently has a bunch of coins up for sale. I'd only consider buying a coin of this rarity unslabbed from a respected local dealer, so I could examine it in hand. Anyone else?
