They really should have had it certified before selling. If it is genuine, the VF/XF grade the dealers gave would be a joke. That is the only thing bothering me about this sale, is why the HECK is that coin not in plastic?

Perhaps that coin won't slab with that rim ding? That's a far too risky prospect for me.

I'd want it in a "Genuine" holder.

Me too, but if he fully backs its authenticity, I'd just take it and send it to ANACS *shrugs*

I think the rim ding might be overlooked on a coin this early and still get slabbed. It looks real enough but I would need the certification.

Yeah, it's a big risk for a lot of reasons. I really don't like the look of the half sovereign up for sale by the same seller. It looks bogus, and causes me to question his other sales. The half eaglen sure "appears" to have a lot of things going for it though. It may be a very well made fake, good enough to fool me. The rim ding doesn't bother me much on a coin like that. Slabbing companys tend to be much more forgiving on early rarities like this, especially when the rest of the coin appears to be so pristine. I wouldn't be shocked to find it in a problem free slab, though I agree that it is technically a problem coin.

It looks like it possibly might be cleaned, or at least I'd assume that on something this expensive as to not overpay. I'd just take this to my local dealer, ask if it was genuine, and have it slabbed and resell it most likely. Or maybe, hold onto it for a few years, these types appreciate like crazy.

Quote: I think the rim ding might be overlooked on a coin this early and still get slabbed. And my comment was really an unqualified one, since I don't own any early gold. I did pop over to Heritage and compare this coin to examples there. Aside from that ding, this one looks rather well-struck. I saw MS coins with less detail than this one.

I would not purchase any coins worth more than a couple hundred unslabbed from anyone other than a very respected dealer, with the coin in hand and a guarentee. Anything that is going this high would be worth the relatively small expense to any ebay seller to be slabbed, espescially seeing it could potentially raise the price of the coin. I would avoid this like the plague, but maybe I'm a bit paranoid?

The auction does have quite a few different photo's but they show how dramatic lighting can be. JMO but it looks cleaned.
I have not dealt with the seller so I don't want to say anything really slanderous about his practice, just my feelers being up. My belief is that it WAS slabbed but in a "whizzed, cleaned" holder so it was removed.
The seller has to know it would legitimize the coin to have it slabbed. They are not foolish nor being generous by intentionally losing out the hundreds of dollars the difference of a problem free slab would bring. It can be no other intention than to deceive. I understand it is strong statement to make but it just doesn't feel right.
Something just seems odd about it.. Not the kind of coin to snipe as last second without first having some questions answered first.

Yeah, that's certainly easily possible. I mean if I could grab it real cheap I might, but I have a feeling it might not go so cheap.

Quote: One of my dream coins! It is awfully tempting, they graded it VF-XF I think it is atleast XF. If I were to buy it. I would send it in for grading and if it came back damaged or fake I would return it citing the overlooked issues.... Yeah, it is very solid choice AU details at least. I think the rest of you are knocking the coin in an attempt to limit the competition! (I'm totally kidding). I'm sure it will get pretty expensive, and I won't be bidding, especially since I'm still broke from my last purchases.
