It really does tick me off, I've been looking for nice stuff for awhile and there are always these friggin' hype artists clogging out the gold section.

I can't even get a DECENT deal on anything with them.

And by the way, why would this guy try to sell it raw even if it he got a bad grade back? No one will bid that much on this without a slab because they are too commonly faked. I mean, there is the guarantee but still....maybe I'm wrong, we'll just have to see.

AU3000 BIN are WAAYYY over priced. At that point, I really didn't look much further into the descriptions.

If the capped half eagle is genuine, the only reason I can see him selling it raw is due to pure ignorance..... Even in a problem holder, that coin with the strike and eye appeal it has should bring in well over 5K.

Well given that the seller is willing to do escrow, I'd say it's pretty safe as far as your transaction's integrity. That's not a good image of the coin, though, and given even that it's genuine, it's altogether likely it was cleaned and it may be badly hairlined which you wouldn't see in that pic.

At that level of price, I'd expect it to net a VF/XF and be certifiable. Do bear in mind that even if cleaned it's a desirable collector's piece and it would be easy to sell.

Good Luck!!

I disagree with the cleaning statement to some extent, and I definitely don't think it has been whizzed. It was probably dipped at some point or lightly wiped; but that coin is chalk full of luster. You can see it clearly on the 4th and 6th picture down; and the textured look on the surfaces are also evidence of remaining luster. If the coin was harshly cleaned, the lack of luster would be the first indication. There are a few hairlines, but I've seen way worse than that in problem free slabs.

That said though, I do agree that there may be signs of cleaning not visible in the pictures....but nothing I see tells me that.

I wouldnt have risked anywhere near that much if I had the money. Whether or not it is worth it depends on whether or not the coin is genuine, and how much the coin is actually damaged.

Well doubled my price.

Hope who ever sold it to the seller got more than it's weight in gold. When gold and silver gets high people lose their mind. I went to a Gold/Silver buying event put on by a "traveling road show" that was offering cash at spot +$20 for gold and spot +$3 for silver. I couldn't believe all of the nice coins people were selling for spot+ and not even taking numismatic value into consideration! I really felt like asking people what they had before they went into the room but I didn't want to get shot.
