Sooo,

Nobody at work cares about or collects coins at all, but everyone knows that I like them and several times folks have brought some old inheritted coins to work for me to look at. We have a snack bar, with open change drawer and you are basically on the honor system to pay and take change as necessary. I decided to try an experiment. I took a couple of old worn common Buffalo nickels and several commom 50's Wheat penny's and used them in making a purchase. I wanted to see if anyone would notice them, and how long it would take if someone did...maybe they would wind up in someone's hand in another town and plant a collecting seed. Well, today, about 2 days later, my boss comes screaming down the hall, "OMG...someone raided grandma's coin jar! holy cow!", and he comes to show me what he's found. He was so excited that he found those in circulation, and I just didn't have the heart to tell him that I intentionally spent them for experimental reasons. I feel kind of guilty, but it is true that he found them in circulation. I mean, just because I spent them, doesn't take away from the fact that it's a circulation "find"..right? I feel a little sneaky, but it was amusing and it made his day.

I do about the same thing at the local library. The kids section takes up the entire basement so when we go there I'll grab something odd, an old dateless buffalo or a foreign coin, the type of thing everyone has lying around, and when I'm ready to go I'll drop the coin somewhere when I go down there to flush my daughter out of the library. The same librarians have been working there for years so we're pretty familiar with them and they figured out what I was doing a long time ago but they say they still get a kick out of it when a kid comes running up showing off the cool coin they found after we leave.

I've started throwing dateless buffalos into the newspaper vending machines here. Only 2 or 3 at a time sometimes only once a month.

I wonder what the vendor is thinking.

Sounds like you may have turned someone on to collecting. Hope I can do the same for someone (hopefully my number one grandson).

I like it! Good idea and it sounds like at the very least you got your boss excited about coins for the day...see if it sticks.

Once I put in a few steelies in my drawer at work. I overheard one employee screaming

"Hey look I found some counterfeit pennies!"

I know what you mean. Try putting a $2 bill there. And the way things are going with the half dollar coinsk those too will soon enough be thought of as a fake coin.
