This is my first Cud I think...this coin has all kinds of issues, not a great specimen.

It also looks like a struck through, grease probably on the obverse and a little on the reverse.

The die is VLDS (Very Late Die State). That is evident with the devices so worn that the coins created from them probably looked that bad in BU. The Cud is just an evidence that this die was on the way out. Unique find. I've only found one Cud so far after the hundreds of thousands that has passed my eyes. The bigger they are the better. It would nice to see even later examples of this die to see how much longer it lasted before retirement?

Just wondering if the proper term would be "rim Cud" instead of just " Cud"

WEll I must admit this is the worst 1981 I have come across. Its pretty cool. I thought I was seeing things. Nice surprise after a long day of inspecting. It does not wrap around onto the reeded edge at all, just sits right on the edge. The area of the Cud is raised but the edge of the coin is intact.

Thanks all for looking.

No. A rim Cud only affects the rim...not the design.

An analysis of this coin would have a handful things that need to be mentioned. Some already have.

Late die state.
Circulation wear (Possibly used in casino slots)
Struck Through Grease on the obverse
and a Nice little Cud:-)

So beside the Cud, that coin actually had a life and it has some stories to tell:-)

That's a FUN Find!

its amazing that these are still being found, Cuds as visable as that on larger sized coins tend to be pulled out of circulation relatively quickly. The only half dollar Cud I've found is perhaps a quarter of the size as yours.

Nice Find!

Anyone have any idea what this coin could sell for?
