I have a medal box full of currency and coins from our 98 year old grandfather that passed away. There are coins here dating back to 1837. First thing I noticed was this Half Dime that someone drilled a hole in this one and made a necklace. Sad... The rest are in fair to excellent shape. I'm no pro but hoping to learn in these forums.

Nice find! I am more inclined to believe it's an 1857. The Half Dimes of 1837 had no stars. :-)

to the CCF dcon.
Unfortunately, this was not at all an uncommon practice to pierce coins with holes and wear as pendants and the such. Since it is from your Grandfather, I'm sure it has a special place in your heart
This is one to pass down in my opinion. There is much combined knowledge here and hope you enjoy your stay. Look forward to more pictures!

to the Forum!

of all your Grandfather's coins! (Nice one you posted! )

I am also sorry about the death of your (apparently cool since he liked coins!) Grandfather!

(Just so you can see if yours is an 1857, here's one without a hole!)

Nice little gift from Grandpa! I think I wouldn't worry about value so much, and wear the Half Dime!
