Has anyone put together a better/high grade set of State Quarters? Background: I have most of the proof and silver proof sets, and do not want to break them. I have also put away over a 120 unc rolls of State Quarters. Couple days ago bought a Dansco book thinking I could fill it easy with nice UNC quarters. I have been working for days and it is not even half full. Sometimes I go thru 2 or 3 rolls with out finding one I like. I guess my questions are. 1. Has anyone put together a nice set from rolls? or do I have to start breaking open mint sets, and hope they are better than the rolls. 2.Anyone have any guide lines for grading State Quarters, for example: What would a MS-65 be like? As far as no bag marks or maybe a few? 3. Why do you think GA rolls are the highest priced. Maybe because hard to find in higher grades.. MS-67+ or just because hard to find rolls. I have 4 rolls of GA .. and not sure I want to open any of them. I better stop asking so much ... any input on this I would be grateful.

You said nothing wrong. It seems that the lurkers outnumber the posters here. I suppose my answer to the main question is no. My Statehood Quarter Dansco was built from circulation without much consideration to grade; other than being in a nice and decent shape. Answers to your individual questions are: 1) Neither mint sets nor rolls, all of my business strike Quarters came from normal pocket change. 2) I do not even know where to begin! I am not an expert on the different MS grades (I am not too concerned with it). My choices are based on my own eye appeal. 3) Good question. I do not think we ever got a solid answer, but it was previously discussed in this thread.

jbuck thanks for the reply with your thoughts on the issue and the link to that thread. From reading that I guess a lot of people are not very excited about State Quarters. I can't help it, I like them a lot .. I have read reports where they estimate 100 million people collect State Quarters. If they all only had $10 each that is a lot of quarters put away ... I am sure it is much more that $10 each. I have over $1200 face value myself. I think they made so many business strike quarters that the quality suffers from having to make so many so fast. I have search hundreds of UNC rolls and find it very hard to find what I consider high grade ones. If I see, what I call bag marks with a 5 power glass than I don't consider it a higher grade .. I need to find some good information on how to grade in MS-65 and up.

One problem you'd have with 'breaking open Mint sets' to fill your Dansco is that the 2005-2008 State Quarters in Mint Sets are struck in 'satin finish', which is a noticably different finish than a BU business strike! Lucky you, the 2005 to 2008 business strikes were saved in fair quantities, and are generally higher quality than earlier issues. For earlier State Quarters (especially 1999-2000), the 'highest MS' coins would indeed be in Mint Sets. The quality of the 1999 business strikes was not very good, compared to later issues. I have a Mint bag full of BU New Jersey-D's (obtained in 1999), and they all look like 'used bus tokens' (and, no, they weren't Struck Through Grease, or defective). The New Jersey is the one State design where the highest-grade coins that I found in circulation were "P's", and when you consider that I live in Denver, that says it all about how well those New Jersey-D's were made. A few people on this forum have albums full of State Quartersthat (purposefully) contain only coins sourced from pocket change. These were/are truly 'collected', for the sake of collecting.

Thanks DNA
I knew some of the mint sets had satin finish, but did not know what years. My goal is to put highest grade I can find. So I do not mind some being satin finish with the other coins. I even have a couple with nice looking tone.
I understand everyone has their own way of collecting, and I would think if they are collecting out of pocket change that they would still want the best grade they could find.
I may be lucky, where three of the coin shops I go to let me sit at their counter and search what ever unc rolls they have and let me have any I choose for 75 cents each. I buy most all, that have good luster and no or very little bag marks/rubs. I agree with you that most of the early years are very poor quality.
Your reply brings another question. Do you think satin finished coins would grade different for business strikes? Do they maybe note on the slab (if say sent in to PCGS) about the Satin finish. I really don't know and am curious.

PCGS and NGC will note the Satin Finish on the slabs. PCGS slab = MS(grade) SF ie: MS69SF (PCGS also had special "Satin Finish" design slabs in 2005) NCG slab = (year) (mintmark) SMS 25¢ ie: 2008 D SMS 25¢ (SMS = Special Mint Set, in the numismatic world these initials normally refer to the 1965-67 U.S. Special Mint Sets issued in place of the traditional Proof and Mint Sets for those 3 years) I have two folders of 50 State Quarters that are MS62+ andthat were sourced exclusively from coins that I received in change in retail transactions! They are all D's, except for the New Jerseys... I just got two nice BU American Samoa-D's in my change today, so yes I do have some (D) Territorial Quarters of comparable grade that I have received in change... Admittedly, this may be stretching the definition of 'circulated' coins, when the only 'circulation' was from an opened BU roll in a cashier's drawer to my pocket flips...

That is great DNA .. I have gotten a few MS quarters in change like that .. but not very many. Nice that you are getting some of the 2009 quarters ... I have not seen a single one. Well other then the ones in my 2009 silver proof set. My bank was doing good on getting me rolls of State Quarters .. but no luck this year.

I'm only lacking about three "P" Mint St. Qtrs. to have a complete P&D album. But, similar to Jbuck, my "P's" were just the best examples from pocket change. The "D's", I got from Uncirculated rolls unopened by the bank (standard Biz. strikes)......(and they're awful purrrrty !) Then, I have a "D" Mint only album, which is complete. (I cashed in most of my rolls of BU Qtrs. I decided that I didn't have the room or the will to keep these. I made the albums I wanted......good enough.) Like you, I'm not going to "crack any Sets" to procure high grade qtrs. to put in my albums.....I'm happy with what I have now. Where, for me, this theory could be different though........is with the Presidential dollars. I've been getting them from the bank when they come out and putting them in albums....(and I have rolls of each Pres. in the first year only) But, each year, I've also been getting the Presidential Proof Sets.....and I intend, at some future point, to crack those Proof Sets open and put them into a nice album, whereas I will not do that for the State Qtrs. These Pres. Dollars, I feel, will need all the help they can get ! And I would just rather have them in Proof beautified condition in ONE place.......an album. Instead of 10 years or so of plastic holders.

eaglefoot That sounds about what I am trying to do. I have just a couple quarters left to finish my P & D quarters. I went to the coin shop this morning and bought a lot of the ones I needed. I am really happy with how the set is turning out. Putting sets like this together is gives me a nice break from working on my Lincoln Cent and type set books. I have been working on the Lincoln cents since I was a kid .. seems like I will never be done upgrading. I also have been putting away rolls of Presidential dollars, I think I am only missing two rolls. I have not thought about it .. but that does sound like a good idea .. putting a nice set of them together. I will have to check and see what different Dansco books my local coin shop have.
