Now this is an explanation for pitting I've never heard before.. on top of it being a garage job..

As you can see in the photos the Lincoln monument has been lightly stamped on the front of the coin. The pitting at the top of the coin is most likely the cause of heat fatigue due to the excessive stamping and you can see the off registration stamp on the front, as well on the lower right of the bottom of the back.

Or perhaps due to excessively hammering the coin on concrete?

This one is so typical of garage jobs that I've hosted the pic for posterity. Nice find xshift--these always crack me up!

Heat-Fatigue!
Poor Mr. Lincoln--where is the respect?

True, BolognaJoe is going to make some money off of the less knowledgeable! I am assuming nothing about his honesty or integrity. I checked his other listings and no coins of anykind. I also checked his feedback and there were no coins sold recently (a quick browse). So I'm giving him the benefit of doubt and figure he is also unknowledgeable and received the said coin in change and try to sell on ebay!

Neither am I. I only suppose he didn't take this by a coin dealer for their opinion?
ebay can be such a crackup. I wish there was just one guy at coin shows selling stuff like this--it would provide some much-needed levity.

I just Emailed BolognaJoe, we'll see what he does!

Would just like to inform you that this coin is not an error! This coin is damaged! The images you see on the coin is a result of another penny being pressed against this one (either in a vice or just hammered). The same thing with the edge of the coin. Same result by placing a coin overlapping the edge and hammering. The pitting is also just damage! So called "Error" Coins like this are known as "Garage Jobs" by the knowledgeable collectors! I am not implying that you did this to the coin yourself, but somebody did and somehow it got back into circulation and found its way into your hands! You have impressive feedback and I'd hate to see you get "Dinged" for this item when the buyer shows it to somebody knowledgeable (like a coin dealer).

I like how he categorized this coin as BU Red. Caught in the die and then caught again! Yeah, It looks like this coin died alright!

Here, "BU" means Bashed Until Red metal shows.
