Is this the result of excessive die polishing or were the striations on the planchet before striking ?

Hmm...do the lines on the reverse match the obverse in direction?
If so, I would guess it's due to acid or corrosion bringing out streaks in the planchet alloy.
That's just a guess...I'm sure you'll hear more.

Yes, the lines run the same way on the obverse and reverse.

Are the lines raised or are they variations in color. It's hard to tell from the picture.

Yes the lines are raised. Sorry, I should have noted that.

If the lines are raised, then it would appear that something etched the surface of the coin. Probably chemically.

Lines in the fields if they were on a badly prepared planchet would not be raised.

Thanks,
Bill

Hope these pix show the raised lines better.

I think it's die because the striations are only in the field.
