Bear with a newbie here ..... but my research today in Jefferson nickels lead me to an incredible story about a fella named Ken Frith who, in 1961, claims to have found the only 1942-S Jefferson with a 1941 reverse.

Here is a link to the story .....

http://www.coin-collecting-guide-fo...-nickel.html

Is this true?

If so ...... geepers .... this might be the absolute most rare US Coin ever ..... a documented 1-of-a-kind from the US Mint.

What do you folks know about this ..... is this fact or fiction?

I welcome all replies and comments

David

Would this apply to the Denver mint also?

It's Fact!

Some info on it is that it sold for $11,000 back in in 1974 Bowers and Ruddy's Stanislaw Herstal sale

In 1975 it was re- auctioned again (Suburban Washington) sale

It was once owned by Robert Bashlow, his estate, then
Manfra, Tordella & Brookes who sold it to Bernard Nagengast

Bernard sold it to Larry Briggs who then sold it to an unidentified collector.

It sometimes gets exhibited at major coin shows.

This has nothing to do with Denver Mint issues as both regular composition nickels and wartime composition issues are struck with D mintmarks.

The regular composition coins have the small D to the right of Monticello and the wartime composition pieces have the mint mark above the Dome.

This pertains only to a "mule" struck on a copper nickel planchet. It is a 1942 obverse paired with a 1941 "Large S" reverse.

So as not to create any confusion,. the There are "Large S" and "Small S" 1941 nickels and as stated, the Large S reverse was used.

Are all 1942 nickels considered wartime nickels, or did they have two compositions for that year?

The CuNi and CuAgMn(introduced Oct 8 per RedBook) compositions were both used in 1942 with the mint mark being the discriminator.
