DIC- Interesting looking 8! I must admit that I too am no expert in this series. One very telling element of coins such as this is the edges. Would it be possible for you to take some shots of the edges? As I'm sure you already know, this type should have the "lotus pattern" around the edges.

DIC- the coin looks "wrong" to me. I can't put my finger on what it is exactly but the globes and crown on the date side (which is the reverse of the coin) don't look right at all. Could just be all the damage is distorting the design but looks mushy to me. Do you own the coin? If not I would pass on buying this example, too many nice ones out there. If you do, can you weigh it and then take pictures of the edge as Archraz suggested? If you want I can dig out my 1750 and post photos and you can compare that way, just let me know.

jfransch- Yeah, I too find this coin to be a bit suspicious. I was just hoping that it was distortion due to the damage. But now that I look again, there is just something about the rim on both the obverse and reverse that kind of bother me. You can barely see the dentals and that "wave pattern" around the rim that is caused by the application of the lotus patter around the edge strikes me as being way too pronounced for a coin with this much wear.

jfransch- Nice one! I am always rather surprised how weakly struck the crown is on the Columnarios. So how would you grade that guy? About a F (Maybe F15)?

I have really never tried to assign grades to my coins, I just buy the ones I like and am always trying to upgrade to better ones. (Thank you by the way for your grade comments in the grading area of this forum. But when I compare to what passes for F15 on an early US Dollar, I would have to say mine is higher than that. All the details show, there is just light even wear on the entire coin, no damage. I am very curious as to what comes back from NGC when I send in some Carlos III bustos. (Some I know are cleaned, I bought them because the detail on the coin was so much better than any of the uncleaned ones I have seen, I am just hoping to get those certified as genuine.)

jfransch- yeah, I kind of wondered if your 1750 was a wee bit higher as well, but I tried to be conservative since I have been told that I am a bit optimistic in my grading of bustos. Regarding the cleaned 8's, I don't at all blame you for buying cleaned coins. Often the coins that were in very nice condition, and therefore were possibly in collections in the 19th and first half of the 20th century, were cleaned. The concept of the need for the preservation of original toning is fairly recent, so if anything cleaning can be indicative of its provenance in older collections rather than in hoards, where it would have just been viewed as bullion.

I also have coins from buried hoards that have been cleaned but are of incredible high quality and/or incredible rarity. They will be some of the ones going to NGC. Next trip into the vault I'll grab some and post them.

jfransch- Very nice! I look forward to seeing them. For curiosity sake, what are these two impressive coins to which you refer?

Incredible rarity, not impressive unless you collect Pillar and Portrait Dollars. Among them: 1733MXF purchased from my diver friend who found several in the Coffins Patch area off the Florida Keys 1754MoMM/MF crowns alike (Royal Crowns)This coin is much rarer than the guide books indicate. 1764LmJM single dot

Thanks all for the inputs. nice looking coin jfransch! The coin is not mine and was considering whether to buy it or not. the pics were just sent to me. I could meet the seller and examine the coin myself but somehow the pictures didn't feel right. I wasn't sure of it was a fake or a poor attempt to clean a heavily circulated coin because the color didn't seemed a bit off. i'll see of I can get a better picture of the rim.

We're glad to help, DIC! While it will be interesting to see pics of the rims of this coin, I have a feeling that ultimately it will be best for you to pass on this one.

DIC I agree with Archeaz, you should pass on this one. There are just too many nice problem free Pillars out there to settle for a problem coin.
