I've decided to concentrate on Russian coins and I've made a few buys in the last few days. I now have a 2,3,5,15 Kopek coins all but one are from Imperial Russia. I would like to get a set coins from one to 50 kopek in imperial Russian dates and the from the USSR dates. i also got a 1909 2 mark silver Prussian coin and a few other random ones. here's a picture of my whole collection. <<Edited to embed image in post - JB>>

to CCF. You should separate your coins so as to protect them from rubbing together and causing abrasions.

Have you considered 2x2's for your coins? That would protect them more than just being in the box.

The most of the ones I care about are in 2x2s or little plastic baggies but the rest are just junk world coins. if it's not worth more than $1 I'm not going to concern myself with it. That and if I was to put all my wheat pennies in 2x2s I would need like 25-30 of them.
I do need to get some 2x2's for a few of them and one of two of the ones that I ordered will need one.

AND A PERSONAL WELCOME TOOOOOOOOO.Not as pretty as the forums but I like mine too. Now for some critisisms. Not sure it that is spelled right. For one thing if you prize those coins, you really should isolate them from each other. Coins bouncing around next to each other is not in the best interest for those coins. Next I hope you know what that wooden container is made of. Appears to be a processed type of wood and if so, may contain chemicals for preservations of the wood and may in fact damage the coins. It appears that the bottom of the wood container is of a different type of wood and appears to be glued in place. If you do not know what type of glue, I really would find another place to store your coins. Do not allow coins of different metals touch each other for long periods of time if in an area where the ambient temperature is subject to change. Placing your coins in those 2x2 flips is a great idea. However, it appears that the one in the photo has the staples that closed it not flattened. By that I mean the reverse of the staple is sticking out and that could scratch other coins.

Eric Hall The wood is solid pine with a dark stain and polyurethane coating. I made it a long time ago and intended to line it with felt but never got around to it. Maybe I'll make that my project in a week or two.
I like the coins but they seem to be holding up just fine in the box. I put an silver coins in some type of protector as well as the rare ones but the rest just aren't worth it for the most part. There's about 15 or so coins that do need to be put in 2x2s I just don't have any right now. I'm going to a coin show soon so I'll probably get some there.
The coins in the lower right are all new coins probably still in circulation in their respective countries. That's why they're not protected.

Polyurethane is a plastic varnish which might contain pvc, I'd remove the coins, pvc can damage them!

As far as I know, polyurethane is used to coat PVC, but does not contain PVC itself. I am sure our resident chemists will correct me if I am wrong, or at least inform us if there is anything else in PUR that would be damaging to coins.

Some of them have been in there for about 2 years and I haven't noticed anything wrong with them.

Sometimes it will take longer than 2 years for the damage to occur, but the coins may be absorbing the PVC as we speak....

PVC itself is not a problem. The additives (plasticizers) used to make PVC soft are the problem; they leach out over time and react with whatever they come in contact with.
I do not know enough about these products (coatings, varnishes, and other sealants), so I cannot say for certain that there is nothing bad for the coins in them.
