I am not real familiar with Great Britain coinage, and was wondering, is there any silver in the 1947 half crown I've got? It's an attractive coin imho, and I'm keeping it no matter what, but was curious...Thanks in advance!

Nope, sorry. Britain's economy was ruined by the war and they couldn't afford silver circulating coins anymore. Many of the wartime silver coins they had were shipped off to America to help pay off the war debt. 1946 was the last year British coins contained silver.

Thanks! No matter the metal, I still love the coin!

I do understand why you asked, though...occasionally one runs into a '47 or '48 that is so shiny that you'd swear it must be silver, especially when most British coins one runs into have a "dead looking" finish to them. I found a couple of florins like that last month -- they obviously didn't see much circulation at all.

1947 half crown coin is made of %75 copper %25 nickel, so it is a cupro-nickel coin. I think half crown coins are one of the most attractive coins ever minted, they have the most elegant design and lovely fonts.
