A friend brought this to me last night. Spent in her store, at least she's only out 50 cents. Weight = 12.23 grams.

Cool...looks like it got circulated a fair amount, too. Your friend obviously wasn't the only person fooled by it.

That is pretty neat. I bet a counterfeit collector would like to add that to his or her collection. Makes me kinda wonder how many are out there. I've never seen one before but I'm sure they've come up in the past. Seems like a lot of trouble for one coin. Any ideas how common these are?

What makes you think this is not a real half dollar? The design looks fine and the weight is about right for a circulated Walker. If it were really made of copper alloy (i.e., brass) it would be quite a bit lighter than 12.23 grams.

I'd bet it is a real Walker that had been plated as a novelty item and the plating is mostly worn off. It's certainly worth at least $6.00 or so for its silver melt value and a collector might pay a bit more, given that the 1928-S is a slightly better date.

I'd be happy to reimburse your friend for the fifty cents plus postage if she wants to send the coin to me!

I agree with Jaobler...

probably a plated, painted, or screwed with coin, that had the plate partially worn off.

It looks like it is real to me.
