I know the title may not be interperated the way I meant it, so if I offended anyone, sorry. I have been collecting odds and ends from my assorted bar shrappnel since my Grandfather gave me a bag of coins from Europe. Since then its been if I can get it, I will collect it. But everyone I talk too tells me the same thing, you should collect just this type or that type, their worth more. Does anyone here just collect for the sake of collecting?

Yes. I collect everything. Though I have some specializations, I collect whatever I find that happens to be a good deal today.

Canadiansailor, don't listen to the dream stealers. You collect whatever makes you happy, that's what is all about. Like you, I collect whatever I can get my hands on. I'm not in it for profit though. I guess if you are in it for profit, that might be a different story. Steve

If it comes my way, catches my eye, and seems like a good deal, it stays! I have my favorites that I collect, but have accumulated a variety of coins that please me...and me alone!

I have a shotgun style of collecting. I buy whatever I'm interested in at the time. I do the type thing because I really like the specific coin. Of course I haven't finished any type set yet, I'm not too worried about it. Do what's the most fun!

My father was the classic collector. Coins were his passion, but he had a wonderful eye for almost everything. His ability to find the treasure among the dross was uncanny. However, despite buying wondrous treasures at knock down prices; he could never bring himself to sell/part with any of them.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I was raised by a COLLECTOR, and as I get older could be turning that way myself.

I'm not very specialized with my collecting habits, and I collect coins more for their beauty and history than anything else. I'm also not much of an variety collector, and I'm sure that I've let some valuable ones slip through my fingers.

I'm like Jays-Dad; I'll take anything, and if I like a particular coin, I will try to put together an assortment of different dates available. The drawback to this is that more times than not, it calls for research as to whether a particular coin was made every year, what mintmarks were available each year, etc.
For example, I have a selection of West German 10-pfennig coins, issued between 1949 and the takeover of the Euro. Now, I don't know if these were issued every year; apparently, there were a bunch of years that were missed, and it is possible that some mints didn't make any while others had a huge mintage, so which ones are scarcer? This is the kind of problem one runs into after accumulating them over a certain period of time, and leads to things such as making lists of ones a collector has so he can keep a lookout for ones they don't have, so as to cut down on buying duplicates. In a lot of cases, definitive answers are hard to find and have to be pieced together from evidence. Luckily, research is much easier in the internet age, and while Krause's catalogue is helpful, it is by no means complete or even an unquestionable authority.

I collect mainly US coins, but also have some foreign notes/coins as well. I consider myself to currently be specializing in diversity, as I am working on a US 19th and 20th century type set. I really like type collecting as I can buy close to 100 different coins without one repeat design in the best grade I can afford! I have found this type of collecting to be much more enjoyable than set collecting and the sets that never get completed due to a couple key dates... Just collect what makes you happy. As the coins are Yours!

The general tennor of comments expresses my own belief that coin collecting is for fun. I collect a bit of everything, but early on I chose to focus primarily on one thing to become an expert at something.
I always wanted to be an expert at something and now after 50 years of collecting counterfeit 8R coins I think I have almost achieved my goal. But I am still learning - so I guess have fun while learning something is my approach.
I think too many people get into coins today to make a killing. The profit motive was not as strong in the 1950s and 1960s when I started but it has changed a lot. Just the number of forgeries proves that point. The advent of the Sheldon 70 point scale has also lead to simply awful prices for "rare" grades. To me grades are really bogus, but that is my own view and very unrealistic in today's market.
So I guess my advice is to ignore the experts and guys like me and collect what you like for whatever reason you want.

I collect what I can get, I have a few roman coins sat next to my serbian coins. I like to collect mainly modern coins, they are cheap, but I have sets from the countries I have lived in, the US (up to 2001 mainly, managed to get a few quarters and so on but I am not willing to play €3 for a quarter which is worth like 20 euro cents or less.)
I do put them into country specific, but if I can get it, it goes into the right folder and hopefully i'll build up the set from those I have, and might get interested in a particular country later on.

At first, I'd collect a little of everything. Eventually I found myself focusing down on a few countries to collect--mostly things that were overlooked by dealers, such as overdates.

Quote: If it comes my way, catches my eye, and seems like a good deal, it stays! I have my favorites that I collect, but have accumulated a variety of coins that please me That is exactly how I feel. You collect for your own reasons. You define what constitutes your range of interest and should not be influenced by the subjectivity of others. The personal value of your coins in your collection is only visible in your eyes.
