Festival of Britain Crown 1951 I recently read the history book Austerity Britain 1945-1951 by by David Kynaston, published in 2008. It was about the period after World War II when Britain's economy was in bad shape and the country had food and other rationing. In 1951, to take people's minds off of the austerity situation, Britain held a world's fair type exposition called the Festival of Britain, and issued 2,000,000 copper-nickel crown coins to commemorate it. The book was interesting enough that I had to have one of these coins, and fortunately, many people saved them and the holders they came in. I have got it in plastic box. Is the box genuine or was the packing done later?

mynt123, I think that your plastic holder was produced later. I looked on ebay for the 1951 crowns and found several in red boxes and several in green boxes. I do not know what the box color significance was.

As much as I am concerned, the colour of the box doesn't signify anything, they just issued them in two different colours back in 1951, hoping for colelctors to buy both issues, which I am sure most people did so.

I just watched the 1949 film "Passport to Pimlico", a comedy about the austerity/rationing period.

I think I'm right in saying that the green box is slightly scarcer than the purple one...

I looked it up last night, and it's the otherway around - the red is scarcer...

there's also a lift off lid, and a slide out box, so I suppose that makes four different boxes...

Based on design this coin is definitely a hundred times better than the crowns issued after it.

What is the coin, complete with box and certificate worth? I have one but can not remember how much I paid for it several years ago.
