I'd like to ask, what's the acceptable price for foreign junk lots (if one wants to buy them ). Junk meaning post-war common non-silver stuff that has been searched a hundred times before . Since there are many of them, even here, so there's no reason to overpay. What price would be considered reasonable? Per kilo/pound and per 100 coins? And besides, how many coins are there in 1 kilo/pound lots? I never counted them Edited by DL20K 10/23/2009 3:08 pm

Right, that "post-war common non-silver stuff". I see that all the time, and dealers asking high prices for pre-Euro coinage such as €10/kg. Given the flood of obsolete coinage, I would think most postwar coins aren't worth much over metal value--€2/100 perhaps? Besides, it's just as easy for me to search the bulk at a coin show and buy only what I want. I'm not sure you have coin shows over there--great source for me.

A favorite seller at the coin shows sells to me at about $4 a pound. All the coins are worth $1 or less.

This raises a good question. My dealer has 5 pound lots for sale for $25. The cool thing is that they are not just modern searched stuff. In fact, he swears that inside the sealed, cardboard boxes are many Canadian large cents and a few other goodies mixed in with the junk bulk world coins. SO what do you guys think? Would this be a good deal for me to try out?

Archraz, That could be a good deal, because I have found key coins in bulk lots that weren't searched/sorted too much. I don't usually buy coins sight unseen, so I'd probably want some guarantee it will be worth my time, even at $25.

DVCollector- True, it is sight unseen, but I know this dealer to be quite honest. He has mentioned that there are some nice foreign coins mixed in there with modern bulk. Considering that I have found key coins in his junk box before, I have a feeling that it won't be a total ripoff.

Since coins weigh different, it's hard to tell how many is in a pound. Archraz.. Those bulk lots are addicting - and that's a pretty good price. The place I was getting them from before was around 7-8 per pound. Does your dealer ship?

I actually recently made a very nice discovery in a small lot of foreign 'junk,' and this for someone who doesn't search foreign lots much or look up many of the coins I pull. I quickly go through and pull ones that I find interesting and disregard the rest, so making a valuable discovery is just that much more unlikely. Who, after all, has that much free time?
Anyway, I had pulled a German 1 pfennig, 1876, that I'd put the VF-XF range. For most of the type, the grade's quite common and might book 5 bucks, so maybe one could get half that for it.
Few weeks later, happened to lug out the Krause for another purpose, learned that the J mint books serious money in VF!
All just to say that there can be some real surprises in lots, especially given the proclivity of many--such as myself--to skip by or disregard much of what is passed around as 'junk'.
I think there's potential there, Archraz, and I'm wondering if you'd even consider picking up a lot for me! I'd pay shipping too, of course...

xshift & SeriousCERES- Well, this dealer mostly focuses on US coins, so often he doesn't really want to get to entangled in shipping foreign stuff. Honestly, I'm not quite sure how many of these lots he even has. They are kept in the back room. I'll have to ask next time I stop by.

Hey, I'd be interested in one of those 5 lb. lots, if he's got lots of them...

snowman & WpgLwr - Thanks for the advice and curiosity about this. I may just have to investigate one of these bulk lots (If he still has any).

Sounds good. My dealer usually sells for $8/lb, but it seems to be mostly coins that people have brought home as souvenirs. A total lack of consistency and runs of multiples from bag to bag. For example, one bag I bought a couple of weeks ago had a lot of Chilean One Peso pieces; another had about 20 of the small Thai 1 Baht coins. Did manage to pull a lot of different dates, though.

Actually I was asking because I think you live in Massachusetts? If so I was looking to see if I had dropped in on this dealer and not even known that he had these world coin lots.
