Greetings all,
I am unsure of the ID of the following cash coin. This was found in a junk bin for ~$0.50. I only have a few cash coins, all from the 1700s and later. Before I defer to the wisdom of the community, I would like to point out what I find interesting:

1.) The characters in the east position is not typical.
2.) The character in the south position and on the reverse remind me more of Japan than China.
3.) The reverse does not have the typical Boo-XXX symbols.

I have tried to ID this coin using online resources. The closest match I have found is a coin from ~1120s, and there is no mention of any marks on the reverse. I have also found a more recent coin which appears to have similar symbols, but in different positions.

Diameter: 25mm, square is 5.5mm
Weight: 3.48-3.51 grams

I believe your coin does indeed have the "Xuan He yuan bao" legend which you mention you found, dating from circa 1119 to 1125. However, there are two clear indications that this is a replica of more recent date:

- the fields on both sides are "spotty". Makers of imitation cash sometimes tried to simulate the rough sandy background of cash coins by making them dimpled.
- the rim is much too wide for a Song Dynasty coin. A genuine example would look more like this one on zeno.ru. The rim of your coin is much wider, more like coins of the Qing Dynasty in style.

I haven't found any examples of coins from the period with "yuan" on the reverse. Since "yuan" can mean "first", I think it's possible that this coin was part of a set of replica coins, and this was the first coin in the Xuan He series.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Thank you, Sap,

I thought it highly unlikely to find such an old coin.

I think I see what you are saying about the dimples on the blown up image, but it is difficult to detect by naked eye.

Other things to note are that, compared to my other cash coins, the coin is flatter, the symbols are more sharply defined, the relief is lower, and the coin is darker in color.

I guess the origin is uncertain. As I bought it for a low price, I doubt it was intended as a numismatic counterfeit targeting westerners.
