This "Mexico Genuine 1636 P 8 Reales Silver piece VF" on ebay looks like a great, well struck cob

But wait..it looks strangely similar to these other cobs with different dates. Since cobs are rough struck using chunks of silver, not planchets, there should never be 2 cobs that look identical. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it.

Sadly someone paid $114 for a $1 tourist trinket. ebay has got to step up to the plate and stop this maddness.

Which sorta limits how many they can sell at one time on ebay. Serious question...how many cobs ended up in China--without chopmarks?

Thanks for the heads up jfransch! Good catch!

Not surprisingly, his other coins look "off" to me as well.

I agree. But until they do, if ever, posts like yours are invaluable. Especially to educate relatively new collectors. And at the very least make them aware how common fakes are on ebay.

Keep up the good work!

DV collector... large quantities of cobs went to Asia because of the Manilla Galleon trade routes that Spain established. As for how many were chopped and how many weren't, it's anybody's guess. Not all coins circulated in China when they went there, many were kept in large hoards and buried or hidden away. The Asia market had a thing for silver (much more so than gold) and it was hoarded as a store of wealth.

jfransch--thanks, that makes sense!
Course, I was just a little facetious in respect to this coin and its location.

DV, I loved your comment about limiting how many they can sell at once but I have seen multiples for sale at the sme time with other cob fakes. It does make you wonder.
