I have started a set of Kennedy Proofs I hope to complete it soon. Not being a Proof, Modern, or MS coin guy really, how do you store your Modern Proofs ? I have these in cardboard 2x2's now, not the best way I know. I see I am getting a bit of toning, I am not against that though. Dansco or Whitman albums? Good for proofs ?
Thanks Tony

I wouldn't expect to see toning with 2x2s. Where are you storing the 2x2s?

They are in a safe, a huge old heavy safe. Temps vary but I think the safe is heavy enough to keep that out.. I have not added silica for quite some time though. As I said the toning is neither a plus or minus to me, just starting to see some, could have started before I got them too I guess.

an airtite should avoid any toning on the coins, or anything that is air tight for that matter. I have heard of people using zip lock bags and inserting a small straw and kid of sucking out air like a vacuum to make sure there is no air in there to avoid toning

Hi Bryan, I have never used airtites before and want to assemble some type of album. I understand that airtites can be put into albums / What kind of albums are these? I am not against toning. Are the Dansco's/Whitmans with slides OK for proofs, or am I taking a chance on scratching when using the slides? I collect circ's so this is all new to me.

I like the 2x2's. I put them into pages in a d-ring binder, and can move them around when I get new coins. Kept like that in a safe with silica and you shouldn't have a problem...

the newer albums will not cause toning themselves but the way you store them may. they do make some albums for airtites but I have never used them

Depending on the area you store your coins in there may well be a problem with high humidity and/or gasses of some kind. Those could slowly seap into a normal 2x2 if sealed with staples as most people do. Then those are not air tight at all. If you want to still use 2x2's, I suggest you seal the edges with clear magic mending tape. I've contacted 3M about their tapes and their clear tapes do not contain anything that would seap out and damage coins. They are considered food safe. The usage of that would stop gasses of any type form seaping in on your coins. Myself, I use Whitman Classic Albums for all my coins. Most of my sets contain slots for Proofs. So far with over 100 such Albums, I've had virtually no problems with any coins toning, tarnishing, corroding or anything else. Of course I place all my albums in Zip Lock Plastic Bags and push out as much air as possible. All duplicates are in 2x2's and sealed with that tape. Others are in those plsatic rolls with the tops also sealed with that tape.

I see, I think I'll go with a Dancso or Whitman album. I could never figure out why Dansco makes the pages such a drab color, no coins stand out from those pages. Whitman on the other hand is the deep blue, Silver coins, and unc, copper for that matter look great in a Whitman. I like the Littleton Albums but have never used them, white like their pages is even better than puke tan like Dansco's.

I have my Kennedy collection in a Dansco and the slides have never been a problem. From 1964 - 2009, I am only missing 17 Proofs / silver proofs.
I have seen albums that will hold airtite rounds, but I have never used on myself.

Ok thanks, Yes I will use an album, I used the binder page method hated it, the 2x2's don;t fit right, ripped pages, and all the binders now are plastic, that's sure to cause some problems in long term storage. I am only doing Proofs from 64 to 90 at this time, ,maybe later come current with the set.

As for Album colors. I agree that the Dansco tannish colors do little to show off any Copper coins. Some almost vanish with that color for the pages. However, many people like the sort of richer looking Album covers that appear more book like in appearance. Whitman's color sure does show off the Copper type coins more. Even the Silver coins appear to stand out. However, again, many people don't like the dark blue Album covers that stand out on a shelf as not a book. Simalar with Intercept Shields Green color. There are also many other Albums such as Littleton and others. One thing to remember is availability. If you start with one and are the type that wants all their Albums to look the same, many manufacturers are limited in their supplies of all types of coins. Same with additional pages. Some collectors prefer to have an assortment of colors so uses different makes. All depends on your likes and dislikes. Basically all of them are made similar and I don't think any of theme are better than the others. Which is better is like asking which car is better.
