Crud filling the die. The transfer of design to the coin went through gunk, which acted in its own manner. Every material has a different viscosity, hardness, etc. Predicting exactly how they will act or reading exactly what was in the crud by looking at a coin would frankly be a study that would be a waste of time since the resulting coins aren't really worth much and are relatively common.
