I'm seeing more and more "miss-attributed" Morgans on
ebay these days. With more folks getting in on the action, there are some neophytes who get a bit overzealous. They see one diagnostic that matches from the photos on VAMWorld and attribute their offering as such. I usually send a "question to seller" and let them know of their error, but lately these are being ignored. I sent one last night for an 1878 7/8TF advertised as a
VAM 41 Top 100 coin. The coin pictured is a
VAM 37 (broken 4th right star and die gouge on lower arrow feathers).
My caution to new VAMmers is this ... don't take the seller's word on an attribution. If the pictures allow, confirm for yourself. And always make sure there is a viable return policy.
I had the opportunity to email one unlucky recipient of a miss-attributed coin. He left negative feedback on the auction and I was able to bring up his page and email him. I let him know I had communicated with the seller on three occasions to advise her the coin was not the rare variety she was advertising. She refused to listen. She had a "no return" policy and the guy was out $500 on a coin worth about $25.
