I have an uncirculated mint packaged 1959 Lincoln Cent roll. They have toned, but how much would it be worth? How should I store them? Edited by tumbleweedtrumpet 10/27/2009 7:46 pm

CDN Greysheet ask for an unc 1959P Lincoln Cent roll is $1.65, rolls were heavily saved since it was the first year for the Memorial design. Storing them in the roll is just fine, there are rolls much older that that floating around. You could also get a plastic coin tube and store the roll in that, opened or unopened.

I don't understand what a mint packaged roll is from 1959. Just what do you have?

A roll of uncirculated 1959 cents in original roll.

I think what he meant by "uncirculated mint packaged" is that he is using uncirculated and mint as the same words.

Uncirculated and packaged by the Mint in their original roll, perhaps?

Could it be a bank wrapped roll .. But sounds like Tumbleweed is saying it says U.S. mint on roll .. maybe a roll from mint gift shop .. in honor of first year of memorial cents.
I had to edit .. did not mean to say S mint .. but U.S. mint I was tired ...sorry

My relatives got it from the bank in 1959. Still in that roll.

I think you will find the mint shipped in bags back in 1959 and did not ship rolls. So an original BU roll would be wrapped outside the mint. They are typically referred to as OBW for original bank wrapped. The reason this makes a differance is the mint now sells rolls so now you can have both mint wrapped rolls or OBW rolls. The current mint wrapped rolls are usually worth more than the OBW rolls. It's not a big deal. I was just pointing out there is a differance between the two.

So, is it "Mint wrapped" or "bank wrapped". Neither one implies to me anything about an "S" mint, however. Regardless, biokemist6 answered this original question right on the button, as per usual. But as to the "wrapping".....in my humble opinion....yeah....Ebay could get you a little more if it wasn't a bank wrapped roll, and it was indeed wrapped by the Mint in 1959 purchased from a "gift shop" perhaps or some Mint outlet back then. Pyrbob is likely right on this though. Do you have a picture ? ......or what exactly does the roll say on it ?

Quote:CDN Greysheet ask for an unc 1959P Lincoln Cent roll is $1.65 The CDN price is just for a straight roll, not so much an OBW roll. An unopened OBW roll carries a premium over a regular roll....in general. I've always paid above (usually well above) CDN for an OBW roll. If there are known errors and varieties for the particular year/mint, the roll is even more valuable. Unfortunately, for a 1959-P roll, there's no great premium, but, IMO, it is worth more than CDN. There could still be a high level gem coin in that roll.

Yes, I was actually surprised by how low it was because I do not normally look at the roll values. It does make sense for it to be a generic date roll vs. a vintage OBW with a higher value. So Thad, do you think a 2x CDN for common rolls would be about right?

Probably more like 3x or more. My dealer once quoted me 10x CDN on a tough Zincoln OBW roll. I told him I'm not taking chances that they were improperly stored....he said once I open the roll it's mine. hehehehehe....I don't blame him. LOL
It may seem odd, but I often prefer opened and tubed rolls. Most people improperly stored their OBW rolls. I've cracked a lot of them to find some horrible looking cents inside. It's quite sad really. On the contrary, I've found some just amazing tubed BU rolls that were obviously put together by an astute collector. I've managed to pluck out quite a few MS-66++ coins whereas they are fairly rare in OBW rolls due to poor storage.
