My sister-in-law told me that they are going to take In God We Trust off of nickels. Anyone else heard anything on this?

I haven't heard anything in particular about nickels but I do hear this rumor on a regular basis. It seems like every time a coin design gets changed this rumor comes up.

Nothing but an urban legend. It really gained traction a few years ago with the introduction of the Prez dollars- the motto, date, and mintmark were added to the rim. Angry chain emails floated around cyberspace about how the Mint removed IGWT and there were calls for boycotts against the new dollars but it was really there the whole time. It created such a stink that the motto was moved back to a face in 2009 and the date and mintmark were left on the edge.

It would take, literally, an act of Congress right now to remove it, and nothing has even been brought up.

I have heard it before too. I don't think they would ever remove it even if they wanted to because it would just create a big headache and numerous petitions and it would turn into a religious argument. Just not worth the hassle either way.
