I also plan to dump my State Quarter and Presidential dollar rolls.

My thoughts are that any appreciation in value will be long, long from now and the the capital tied up in these rolls can be better spent on something more 'needed'

There certainly is a great deal of wisdom in dumping much of one's hoard of both Pres dollars and State Quarters. In many cases their appreciation will be very slow, and if you're in the coin collecting *industry* in order to make quick money, hoarding them is not smart. Clearly the bullion markets are where quicker values are to be made, if you're prepared to face the very real volatility of those markets. For me, it's a little too much like playing poker, and Kenny Rogers often reminds me that no, I don't know "when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em".

One caveat to the wisdom of dumping State Quarters is the fact that, every time I open up a coin magazine, I see dealers' offers to buy rolls of many states at pretty decent premiums (I know Tennessee is big, for instance). I've sold String rolls myself to dealers and collectors for what is to me a very acceptable but small profit. If I had more than a couple of the "key" states in rolls right now, I'd look into selling them that way, rather than settling for face at the bank or just spending them. I'd also be very tempted to wait out the current economic downturn until we're back on another crest before unloading large quantities, but that's because I'm a little superstitious and, for now, can afford to wait.

As for the Presidents, I think it's "too early to call". If this country ever does get around to actually using dollar coins instead of bills, your hoard of unc Presidents will instantly gain in value. I like to think we'll get there some day, when enough people understand how much more it costs US to have paper dollar bills, but then again, I'm probably just being a shill for those who think we should make the Mint run on our behalf more efficiently. So, I'll go ahead and preemptively apologize for that now, and get it out of the way! ;)

A lot of my 'stash' of 'common' State Quarter rolls have been
replaced with Territorial Quarter rolls.

1: It's much more difficult to obtain 2009 BU coin rolls (of
any type!) from banks at face value, than it was for 1999-2008 coins.

2: Less interest in saving by the general public, now that the
50 States are done. (also, the situation stated in #1 makes many
people have to pay premiums to get any 2009 Quarters))

3: Circulation of the 2009 Quarters has been very limited,
and a large number of the public are not even aware that the 2009
Territorial Quarters exist.

4: The much lower mintages of the Territorial Quarters.

Massive attrition of State Quarter BU rolls would ironically benefit
their collectibility in the long term....
