It all comes down to you and what you want. Since I collect Lincolns, I feel that every date, mint and proof is what I need for my set. I am not into the varieties (but would not complain about having them) and would rather put the money into a nicer coin for my existing set.

Where this idea really comes into play is my Large Cent collection because there are a lot of different varieties for a fair amount of the coins. My goal here is to have ONE from each year and anything else is just a bonus.

The other thought to this question is condition, is the set complete when you have one of each or when you have the highest grade? If you go by the second part you will never have a complete set because there is always that one coin that could be upgraded.

In my opinion, Penny pincher has a very good and valid point.

I too collect this coin and have at least 4 sets or more going, I have the original set from my 1st album from 1963, I have been upgrading for years, my mint state set with proofs is the prize of the sets, and that is constantly being looked at for the best I can locate to make this set as sweet and "crisp" a set as I can make it.

I agree you will not be "complete", because if you have the passion to fill holes in an album, and you do just that, there will always come a day when you see another coin, that just, to you, looks better than the one you have already. My other sets are also being upgraded when ever I have the $$$$$$ and can locate the right shop/dealer who has "just some better looking coins than I already have, just my opinion.....

The term complete also is all up to the collector, and what He/She want to do and is happy with.

This was a very interesting link to read. And it sounds like a lot of you have some very nice coins in your sets.

I started my first set back in the 60's Whitman book number 2. By the 80's I started the dansco book .. it went up to 1989. I decided then that I would try to fill every hole, except the 1922 plain. To me this error coin and wish I could get a dansco book that does not have it. My goal is to have VF- XF coins on the first page with UNC and proofs for all the rest. I am getting very close to being done. Funny I spend most of my time looking at that first page with the VF-XF coins, not the pages with UNC's and proofs. I like thinking about where those coins were spent. A real nice good looking old Lincoln that has seen some circulation somehow touches history to me.

Oh .. I forgot to say I did buy a new Danco book this year so I could have the current dates. Been breaking a lot of mint and proof sets to get the last 20 years of coins.

I don't think I will ever have a complete set of Lincoln pennies as I cannot justify paying a fortune for a couple of key dates ie. the 1909 s vdb and the 1922 plain. I would rather invest that money into multiple coins rather than just fill a hole to appease my ego. Besides, I can always go and buy one should I ever truly feel the need to have a key date coin. Therefore a "complete" set for me is everything but coins valued at more than $50.00 unless I cherry picked it for much less. Sincerely, John Leckrone

for me a complete set would be all years and mint marks. No Proofs necessary
