Very nice coin, I like the die break running from Half through United. Looks like a weak strike in the area of the lower shield and feathers. I'm going to grade it at AU-53.

Nice coin Johnny! Even though a few of the stars have incomplete radial lines the strike still seems slightly above average for the issue. The two tiny pockmarks on the cheek are not distracting and the coin otherwise is quite mark-free. The apparent weak luster would limit the grade so I'll agree with Echizento on AU-53. If there is more luster than shown in the photos I'd go AU-55. There are no obvious signs of cleaning but the very uniform color could indicate it had been gently dipped once upon a time. I expect it would still grade at PCGS or NGC. Is that a Cud next to the date, or a rim bruise (hope not!)?

I'd go with AU58. Very problem free! Nice coin!! I think the rim marks at 5 and 9 olock on the obverse are just Cuds from the minting process. Nice die cracks on the reverse!

Thanks for all of your comments guys! Yeah, I was thinking in the choice AU range, but I don't have the coin in hand yet. It was purchased raw for $248, and I admit it is kind of a gamble. It is obvious to me that the obverse has a significant amount of luster remaining, but the reverse is harder to tell. I am sure it has been dipped at some point, but I'd be surprised if it were harshly cleaned. The seller seemed reputable and stated it was not cleaned, so I will just return it if it is. I agree with AU-53, with a shot at 55. It would need a lot more luster to make 58. Yes, it is a reeded edge bust. :-)

I need one for my 7070 and I drool over these things. I think an AU is out of my (wife's) price range but appreciate you posting this one! If that's the Bust Half type I'd love to see what your other coins look like.

JCook: Thanks! Ask and you shall receive. :-) Here are the latest photos of my type set: https://goccf.com/t/49752I've upgraded several and sold several since then(including the vf/xf 1837 in the pictured hole), but it's fairly representative of my collection.
