As some of you know, I'm assembling a type collection of UK circulated coins. My collection ranges from 1/4 Farthings to the decimal 1 pounds, I have also included things like the 25 pence and a few of the set only coins like the 1992 50 pence.

My question is, remember I live in California, are the 2 pound coins used in circulation today?

I think there are 2 types Nickel-brass and a Bi-metallic. I am thinking of including them, or at least samples of them, if they are used in circulation.

Thanks

They can be picked up from circulation, particularly the newer bimetallic ones, though I don't think they're as "common" as £1 coins. I'm in Australia, so I'm only going off what family and friends that visited there have reported to me; they've brought me back £2 coins they found in circulation, including a nice circulating commemorative one from 2004 with Trevithick's steam train on it. Quite generous of them, given the exchange rate at the time was nearly £1 = AU$3.

uouo77 = Yes, bi-metallic two pounds coins are in circulation at Great Britain right now, since 1997 (first year they were minted). They are legal tender, yet not as common as 1 pound coins.

£1 do seem to circulate the most since there no £1 note and therefore almost every £1 coin that I see that is a over a year old seems rather beatup.

£2 are used as well. In fact, I just received a very nice 2008 one today in change.

The commemoratives are sometimes quite hard to find, every time I get a nice shiny £2 coin I think oww, this could be one, only to see the normal coin again! Can't remember the last time I even got a commemorative one, I'm still waiting for one of the 2007 coins I think!

Thanks all for the info. Since I'm not a big fan of commemoratives, I'm still debating if I should add the 2 pounds to my type collection or not. It's bad enough that I added the 50p coins.

I'm in Georgia and starting a Type Set for my wife (who is British). Like yours, hers will be a circulated set. Is there a Dansco album (similar to the U.S. 7070) for a British T.S.? The few coins I already have aren't really displayable right now but have been segregated by KM# within coin type. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've had Dansco print some covers with "Great Britain Volume 1" - 2 - 3 up to vol 6, using there largest album. I then use the Dansco pages for 2 by 2 holders (you can get about 9 pages in each book).

I don't know of any per-made Type books for Great Britain. Remember, in the Dansco US type book there are about 85 coins. Queen Elizabeth has about 98 coins up to the 2 pound by herself. I use an album and a half just for her, and I also use about a book for Queen Victoria. There are a lot of coins in GB.

If you are interested I have my collection online at http://bills-stuff.net/
Hope this helps
Bill

Bill, you should because every time I come to London, I am able to spot one or two comemmoritive and lots of circulating, regular 2 pound coins. I think you sohuld, because they are aprt of the regular circulation coins of the UK.

Just picked up £40 in two pounds coins from the bank to look thru.

What I do next is trade them in for 1 pounds, then 50 pence, then 20 pence, and so forth.

Will let you know if I find anything interesting.

I want to thank all the members, along with other friends, who have talked me into adding the 2 pound coins to my collection.

I now have only one more hurdle, before I can start. It's called a wife

Yep, about $107, however, I live in California and can't just go to the bank and get a bag full. I have to work my $%@# off for each one - lol
