I was watching this coin, I can't believe I may have missed out on it for a total final cost of $5.44 shipped. I got distracted at ending time.
It doesn't quite look right to me as a 1946 D over up-side-down D but then again, I can see something close.
I have a hole in my set for this particular variety.
Did I blow it or is this just a die gouge or what?

I don't think you missed out at all. It looks more like Machine Doubling on that coin. I found an image from one of my sources and it should look like this:

It's not the inverted, but does look like a D over D
