Greece. The word that kind of looks like "EAAAAOE" is "ELLADOS" in the Greek alphabet. "Ellas" or "Hellas" is the Greek word for "Greece".

The word that resembles "TPAIIEZA" is "TRAPEZA", which literally means "table". In ancient and mediaeval times, bankers would set up moneychanging tables in the marketplaces, so "trapeza" came to mean "bank". "Trapeza tes Ellados" therefore means "Bank of Greece".

"APAXMEE" is "DRACHMES", the unit of currency. "XIAIEE" is "CHILIES", the Greek word for (as you can probably guess) one thousand.

Just one question on this one. My Krause has the VG and VF grades at FV (face value I assume). Is the Greek government still redeeming the pre-Euro banknotes or is it an error in the latest (15th edition) Krause?

As I understand it's usage, "FV" in Pick doesn't necessarily mean "you can still spend this note", it just means it isn't worth more than the (theoretical) face value.

Drachma notes and coins are no longer legal tender, but I believe the Bank of Greece will still exchange them at the official rate until 10 years after the introduction of the euro, which would be until 2012.

Yes, February 2012 is the deadline for pre-euro notes from Greece, and also from Finland (coins too), France, and Italy (coins too). The drachma coins cannot be redeemed any more.
