I got this 1743 pillar dollar from my cousin. He got it from a friend over 30 years ago. His friend was older and has passed on so we cannot ask any questions. All my cousin knows is that his friend was in the military and said that is when he got it. My cousin tells me that his friend was stationed in Texas at one time but does not know where else. My question is: Is this a real 1743 pillar dollar or is it a copy? It weighs 25.4 grams and all other measurements match a real one. I'm uploading 3 photographs of the coin. Any help anyone can provide will be appreciated. Thanks.

25.4 grams sounds much too lightweight: the book weight is 27.06 grams. To have lost that much weight, a genuine coin would look a lot more worn than that.

There's also weakness in the design, and an overall porosity, that makes me think it's a cast copy.

The coin doesn't look right to me, I agree with Sap that it looks like a cast copy. The details are all mushy on this coin yet it doesn't appear to have much circulation wear. Can you post sharper photos of the edge? That is usually the easiest way to spot a copy.
This coin is common as a salvage coin, that could explain the weight and porosity but I would need to hold the coin and examine it to make that determination.
This is a hard year to find undamaged in high grade

Here is a 1743 salvage coin. Weight is similar at 25.7grms but look at the difference in sharpness on the details. The difference I believe is between "struck" and "cast".

Thanks for the input. I appreciate the help. I will attempt to get a couple of better images of the edge of the coin and post them. What do I look for on the edge to determine that it is either an original or a copy?

Hello and thanks again for your input. I am attaching 2 new images of the edge of the pillar dollar. I hope they help in determining if this coin is an original or a copy. I appreciate your help.

As mentioned already in this thread - it's a cast counterfeit. Porous surfaces, lack of dentils, and low weight combined with the lack of design/legend sharpness (and that edge) are your indicators.

Here's one from the recent Baldwin's sale that went for around $700. It's easier to spot the signs when you compare them side by side.

Thanks for all the help with the I.D. of the pillar dollar copy. I appreciate it. Does anyone have an idea of how many of these 1743 copies are out there? I've read where other years were copied but have not found information on this year.
