What is a black coin/ cent? I've heard about them but don't know what they are. I have two black nickels and one black quarter and I am curious. It's as if they didn't get the finishing on them. Does this make sense? One is a 1981 P nickel. The other is a 1984 P nickel and one 1970 D quarter. Should I use them for pocket change or should I keep them? My pics never come out well so that's why I didn't post any. I can send those if you need them but they are fuzzy, not clear at all. Would someone please educate me on 'black coins'?

A "black coin" can be the effect of many different causes, most notably a house fire. Coins that are buried for a long time can turn black too.

The only numismatically collectible form of coloration on coins is toning, and some proof set nickels were known for turning dark because of contaminated planchet wash. These range from green or yellow to a deep purple or blue...some people will pay a premium for them, others will not. Anyhow, I have heard these referred to as "black beauty" coins...but it's only on nickels.

Actually some of those nickels and quarters coins look black while others look brown, like old pennies, old copper.
