I guess my problem with the shield look is that it is unoriginal. The US Mint has produced similar designs in the past and this just strikes me as a "been there, done that".
I find the irony in the 2009 Lincoln's when compared to the 2010. I find the 2009 series beautifully done and somewhat original. Sad to see it going to this. Frankly I'd rather just have them go back to the Memorial reverse.

timbryant, I would assume 1st quarter of 2010 if it hasn't begun already.

Thought I read that the obverse will be altered also. Has anyone seen or heard about it? Wonder if they will take Lincoln's profile and turn him a bit forward like they did with the Jefferson nickel.

In my opinion, the designs of our coins have deteriorated significantly since the introduction of the State Quarter program. The designs appear to be more like etchings than artwork. The older coinage was much more detailed and graceful. Perhaps these new designs, along with the metal composition, are much cheaper to produce? Just a thought.

I would have preferred they stick with the LP4 reverse, as it is symbolic of the highest office in the US. I like the shield, and for those that don't, it should be gone in a half century or so.

My problem Neil is that I look at the shield design as unoriginal. The LPs this year have all be original and I see the shield as a let down.

"Maybe the plan is to make the new design so awful that people wont mind the discontinuing of the denomination!"
I am from Pennsylvania and sales tax is 6%! What will we have to do give the retailers a portion of our nickel in order to pay the tax on sale items? Right! More like taxes will be rounded up to the nearest nickel, pretty sweet for a tax increase.
And the hosing continues!

Quote: More like taxes will be rounded up to the nearest nickel, pretty sweet for a tax increase. Getting rid of the cent does not mean higher taxes. You are not going to get "nickel and dimed" into debt (seriously). Your sales tax is already rounded to the nearest cent and applies to the total purchase and not each item. Rounding to the nearest five cents for cash transactions would be no different; you might lose Two Cents on one purchase while gaining Two Cents on another. Also, electronic transactions would still be to the nearest cent. I am sure they had the same debate when the half-cent was discontinued, but it happened anyway and the masses did not fall into chaos; especially considering that the half-cent was worth a lot more than what a cent is today! We might as well get rid of the nickel and dime if we want to keep it "even" with that change!

clintonfitch, thanks for the reply. Guess I was mistaken. Thought I read somewhere that Lincoln's profile would be altered but I guess not. The shield is starting to grow on me now. When there is a shiny new 2010 Lincoln Cent in my hand I think I may like it. Probably will just have to get used to it.
