Today I saw what is to become the new 2010 cents design, while I did think the coin needed a "face lift", I did not think of all the choices to be checked out for the actual new design, on the reverse, that this design would be selected.  I do not think the design has any artistic character, no originality, simply put, bland, and to be selected over some of the other submitted designs, well I think the ball was dropped.  I would of thought the selected design would of had some artistic "jump out at you design",with the technology today, the infusion program IMO, there were other designs submitted which I thought would of become the winner for the new design, this is just my opinion, any thoughts or opinions welcome |

Maybe the plan is to make the new design so awful that people wont mind the discontinuing of the denomination!

Better than the last, but still a boring design. That's what happens when you have a committee deciding. I liked when they just hired a guy like VDB and said "DO IT".

Nothing about it makes you want to stand up and cheer; on the other hand nothing extremely horrible, either. In a word, bland. Might look much better on the coin in hand. Wonder if the words "ONE CENT" will be raised or incuse? I would bet incuse, because with that scroll running across the shield any lettering on the scroll would be by far the highest point of the design; hence would wear down quickly.

The Mints Motto......."You can make some Numismatists happy some of the time, but most Numismatists unhappy most of the time."They are not in business to satisfy the desires of numismatists. (Otherwise we'd have an "S" on that Lincoln Dollar in the L. C. & C. Sets !) ...  No, to the contrary, they are in business to make as much money as they can, (pun intended !  ) and to mint enough coinage and currency to meet the usage demands. The committees, I'm sure, think they are making decisions which represent the "larger opinions of America".....and do some "testing", "contests", and "polls".....etc. etc. etc. Also, of course, to consider metal composition, etc. for the most economical/practical processes. ( many would say they lose here too.) But to hardcore/true in the heart coin collectors, whose passion are these particular designs and compositions and weights and mintage numbers and overall collectibility factors......it's often just plain disappointing and frustrating. The problem is.....they "mint" very little for us......they're minted for people who will spend about 4 seconds looking at the new Cent, Westward Series Nickel, etc. etc......and the Mint hopes that "newbies" in this "four seconds" will decide to "hoard them"..(ex. 50 St. Qtrs)...this is where/how the Mint will make the most money. So, they would NEVER mint a bunch of "circulation" coins for a "small percentage of the American public".... NEVER !I'm going to finish my breakfast now...... n' have another cup of coffee...

Historically, it provides a good symbol used during the Civil War, and very appropriate for the reverse of a Lincoln. I like it!  |

My opinion--if the US mint wants to revive 19th C. coinage designs, at least do it well. This looks cartoonish.
The design will look different in metal, but I'm with the rest--it's just a little too lackluster.

I just said on another thread that I think that a simple design like
this will translate better to the 'metal' on a small 1¢ coin than
something like the eagle design, whose fine details would require
viewing with a loupe to fully appreciate on a 1¢ coin.
I think that one reason why the eagle reverse was historically used
only on coins 25¢ and above, is because the eagle's details would
have been too cluttered (and 'lost' to the naked eye) on small
business strike coins like the Dime, Half-Dime, and especially the Gold $1 coin!
The eagle design would have looked outstanding under a loupe as a
Proof, but I think that the simple shield design will look better
'in practice' (ie. general 'naked eye' view) on business strike coins.
A simple design is better suited to high speed production, and the
Mint is in business to make large volumes of business strike coins.

Like previously stated, need to see it on the coin. But not too thrilled. Maybe they made it poor so they can again change the design in a year. A 1 or 2 year run may be collectable, only if it was copper. I hate the zincolns. They way they deteriorate, none will be around in a 100 years.

Oh......I forgot to say whether or not I liked "the choice".....  It's certainly "simple" ........ and not too "busy" with detail ! I mentioned in an old thread that I kind of liked this one actually... but really, I will just wait until the "coin is in hand" to decide.I do think the Proofs will look VERY interesting....
