This one is up for auction and I'm a sucker for problem coins. I've purchased from this seller before and besides the hole he claims there has been a light cleaning. I trust him in his opinion but the auction price is $39. Overall I'd say it grades VF-details any opinions?

It's not my $39 but I wouldn't buy it. The details are VF+ but the damage ruins the coin.

I'd guess it's worth $25 or so...

$39 for that coin is a rip-off, hands down in my opinion. Sorry, but holed coins usually go for about 10-15% of the value they would go for without the hole, unless they are extreme rarities. I purchased a problem free XF classic head Half Cent for $70. You can do MUCH better for $40. I wouldn't pay more than $10 or $15 for the pictured coin, but maybe it would be worth more to someone who collects holed coins?

yep $39 was my hesitation, hence my looking for a second opinion. Granted there were only 63,000 minted but a low end VF of the same year can be picked up for low $100's.

I'm guessing it's someone that collects holed coins that bid it up that high.

Well, this is a nice problem coin for you! It is in pretty good shape, WAY too bad about the hole!

(However, I wouldn't buy it just because of the reasons everyone has listed here.)

But if you're starting a collection of problem coins, this one would fit right in!

Our hobby can fit in all likes and dislikes!

I do have a variety of problem coins its just the price I didn't like and with the bid that high I was really wondering if I was missing something here.

Alas it doesn't matter, bidding ended 20 minutes ago and I passed. Weird part was that it opened at 99 cents and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why the bids.
